The Blind Spot
I’ve been working with successful leaders for almost 20 years now. And no matter how successful they’ve been, there’s still a nagging question in the back of their mind:
Why am I successful? What is it that really got me here?
Maybe this question is nagging you as well.
Of course, there’s hard work, skills, and expertise you’ve developed over time. Maybe you’ve had some lucky breaks—right place, right time. But sometimes, if you’re honest, you wonder if you’re just lucky. Or worse, that you’re not really as good as people think you are.
And that question can quietly hold you back.
Maybe you want to make a change, but you’re not sure if you’ll still “have it” in a different role, business, or field. Maybe you want to lead with greater impact, but you don’t know what actually got you this far in the first place.
So how do you leverage what you don’t even know?
The Blind Spot
Here’s the truth: most people don’t really know who they are.
There are two versions of us:
The “us” we are aware of—our thoughts, feelings, goals, experiences, successes, and failures.
The “us” we’re almost completely blind to—our impact.
Most of us know the first one very well. It’s the story we live in, the inner world we navigate every day. But the second one—the version of ourselves that exists in other people’s experience? That’s where the blind spot lives.
I would argue that we are as much, if not more, our impact as we are our inner story. Yet most of us have very little understanding of how we actually show up for others—the presence we carry, the effects we create, the ways we influence and inspire the people around us.
And because we can’t see it, we often underestimate it. Or dismiss it completely.
This isn’t just a personal issue; it’s a cultural blind spot. We live in a world that rarely teaches us to notice, reflect on, or name our impact. Instead, we focus almost entirely on what we produce, achieve, or prove. That blind spot limits all of us, keeping us from fully seeing our own power and each other’s.
What We Can’t See Limits Us
This blind spot keeps us playing small. It feeds self-doubt and makes us question our ability to lead, change, or grow. It has us thinking, “What if I don’t really have what it takes? What if the success I’ve had was just a fluke?”
But here’s the thing: you are already more gifted, powerful, and impactful than you think you are.
What if you could name the gifts, talents, and genius that others see but you’ve taken for granted?
What if you could wield those qualities intentionally, so they’re even more effective and impactful?
What if you could simply rely on who you already are and know, without question, that you are enough?
Because you are.
Closing the Gap
This is the work I do with leaders, visionaries, and innovators every day: helping them uncover what’s been hiding in plain sight—their unique mix of gifts, genius, and brilliance that creates an impact like no other.
When you discover and embrace these qualities, you start living and leading with your whole self.
What’s Your Blind Spot?
Here’s my invitation: begin to get curious. Ask the people you trust most:
“What’s the impact I have on you?”
“What’s the thing I do that you find extraordinary—even if I think it’s no big deal?”
And then really listen.
Because once you start to close this gap, you’ll realize the blind spot was never about your limitations. It was about your unrecognized brilliance.
